In September 2006 I had an interest in visiting Haiti. I did an extensive research in an attempt to find a location where I as a single woman traveling alone would feel safe. I came across Hearts Together for Haiti and began to pour over the information they provided. I contacted the HTFH office and immediately they began to work on making arrangements for my visit to Labadie.

On my arrival at the airport in Cap Haitien I was greeted by HTFH staff members and escorted aboard a tap-tap to Labadie. My first impression was pleasantly overwhelming as I entered this charming remote village nestled in the mountains with the ocean in view. The HTFH staff was courteous and welcomed me with open arms. Within a few hours I knew I had found a second home.

I immediately began to immerse myself into the village and began to interact with the children and Labadians.(?) As an educator I was thrilled to see the schools packed to capacity with children in uniforms eager to learn. Students daily are treated to a healthy and nutritious lunch provided by HTFH.

This is a third world country and poverty is rampant. There were periods of power shortage and the heat can be intense. However, you can find relief under a mango tree, coconut palms or swimming in the crystal clean ocean. During my 14 day visit I never felt unsafe, the village is lively and always a buzz with women scrubbing laundry by hand, cooking outside in open kettles or carrying water on their heads from the river.. I attempted that task but failed drastically.

I will return to Labadie to see Rose Carline, a beautiful 11 year old girl that stole my heart. If you should meet that special child that needs you, HTFH will assist you in their child sponsorship program. The HTFH Chef, Fritz is a culinary genius. Lutes the former mayor of Labadie is a true gentlemen and friend who will assist in setting up an itinerary. Patrick & Kino, along with other young men will eagerly assist you in maneuvering around the village. I have never felt safer or more loved..

Thank you HTFH and the village of Labadie for a life changing opportunity.
