Dreams
for the Future:
Clean Water for Cité Soleil:
Though many of us choose to buy bottled water,
or have filtration devices on our taps, we are, for the most part,
perfectly able to drink the water that we have coming to our homes.
In Cité Soleil, a shanty town built on
and surrounded by a garbage dump, clean water is akin to gold. There
is no running water and residents are forced to walk miles for a
bucket of water that must be boiled before consumption, or disease,
even death is risked. Birth defects are higher in Cité Soleil
than any other area of Haiti.
However, there stands and amazing Water Project
Site in the midst of this that could change the lives of 30 to 50
thousand people. Unfortunately, it stands unused. The Catholic Charity
that built this potential life saver is no longer running due to
the death of its founding priest nearly 2 years ago.
HTFH has promised the people of Cité
Soleil that, when it has the money- a steady $10,000 US per month-
to restart and maintain the Water Project, no child will again cry
from extreme thirst, or worse yet, from the pain of dysentery caused
by dirty water.
It is very important
to note that NO PROJECT is ever implemented in a Haitian Community
without the input and CONSENT of the people. Haitian sister committees
to HTFH exist and Fr. John conducts "town meetings" whenever
he is in Haiti to update the people and get their feedback
